    Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need to know for each HSK level?

In the HSK Studio dictionary, HSK 1 has 369 words, and the levels together reach 677 (HSK 2), 1,247 (HSK 3), 2,370 (HSK 4), 4,162 (HSK 5) and 6,481 (HSK 6). The HSK 7-9 band brings the total to 11,643. The table above lists every level.

Are these numbers the official HSK word counts?

No. They are the number of entries per level in the dictionary HSK Studio uses, which follows the HSK 3.0 level assignments. Other sites and the official syllabus document may count words differently, for example by splitting or merging variants, so totals can differ by some amount.

Does knowing this many words mean I can pass the HSK exam?

No. The calculator only compares a number with word counts. The exam also tests listening, reading and writing, and knowing a word means different things to different people. Treat the result as a rough guide to which vocabulary list to study next.

How is the level worked out?

It assumes you learned words level by level. If your vocabulary size is at least the cumulative count for a level, that level counts as covered, and the next level is shown with the words still missing.
